4 Vision Concerns In Children To Watch Out For

Children can be born with vision issues, and you may not even be aware that your child has them until they are school-aged. Even a school-aged child may have vision problems that you aren't aware of, especially if your child isn't complaining that they aren't able to see properly. There are things you can keep an eye out for that can be telltale signs of a vision problem. Read on for a few vision concerns and signs to keep an eye out for.

1. Complaints Of Headaches

If your child is complaining of headaches, it could simply be headaches or allergies, but it could also be a problem with your child's vision. If your child is getting headaches often, you should take your child to the optometrist for an eye exam. If your child is straining to see, that could lead to headaches.

2. Redness Or Oozing

If your child's eyes are red or are oozing with discharge, it is a vision concern. It could be pink eye, and if it isn't taken care of or caught quickly enough, it could cause further eye irritation or issues. If you spot these types of problems in your child's eyes, take your child to the optometrist for an eye exam to be sure it's pink eye and not something more serious. Pink eye can also be contagious, so it can spread to others in your household or to classmates.

3. Eyes Turning In Or Out

If your child's eyes are beginning to turn inward or outward, or if you notice just one is turning, it may be due to a muscle issue in the eyes. In this case, your child may need eyeglasses to help with this problem, or your child may need surgery. If you spot this problem, be sure to take your child to the optometrist for an eye exam right away for treatment options. Waiting too long could lead to further issues or needing extra treatments.

4. Rubbing Or Scratching Eyes

If your child is rubbing or scratching their eyes often, it could be allergies, or there may be something in their eyes. If your child has something in their eyes and they rub or scratch their eyes, their cornea could get scratched and be permanently damaged. If you notice your child rubbing or scratching their eyes excessively, take your child to the eye doctor for an exam.

If your child is experiencing any of these problems, they are vision concerns that should be looked into. Take your child to the eye doctor to prevent further damage to your child's eyes or vision.
